We have a couple of our local players to spotlight from this event:
Alex
Alex Papadopoulos played his Calibrated Blast deck and rolled through opponents on day 1.
At the end of Day 1 Alex was 7-1 with this list, losing only to a Temur Midrange deck in round 8 and narrowly missing being the only 8-0 player on the first day! Here are what his match ups and results looked like on day 1.
Round | Opponent | Decklist | Result |
---|---|---|---|
Round 1 | Jacob Danilkiewicz | Colorless Prison | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-1-0 |
Round 2 | JasonP | Amulet Titan | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-0-0 |
Round 3 | Gareth Antle | Temur Rhinos | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-1-0 |

Round 7 | Patrick Wu | Azorius Prison | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-0-0 |
Round 8 | AndK7 | Temur Midrange | AndK7 won 2-1-0 |
Day 2 proved to be much more difficult for the Calibrated Blast deck, as Alex faced a couple of different decks in Four-Color Omnath and Living End. Nearing the conclusion of day 2 Alex was in 13th place, just behind Pascal Maynard after a long fight for a spot in the top 8.
Round 9 | Tyler Simon | Four-Color Omnath | Tyler Simon won 2-1-0 |
Round 10 | Drew Christensen | Temur Rhinos | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-1-0 |
Round 11 | Tman85 | Temur Rhinos | Alex Papadopoulos won 2-1-0 |
Round 12 | Ulysse Gagnon Paradis | Living End | Ulysse Gagnon Paradis won 2-0-0 |
Round 13 | Jordan Tebby | Amulet Titan | Jordan Tebby won 2-0-0 |
Unfortunately for Alex, in round 13 he fell to Jordan Tebby’s Amulet Titan deck in 2 games, ending with a 9-4 record in 28th place. Alex got to take home $500 of the prize pool this time. It is worth noting that despite being the only Calibrated Blast deck in the room, Alex won 69% of his matches at the tournament. Here’s a quick little deck tech on Alex’s unique deck:
Zak
Another local player, Zak Turchansky also performed exceptionally well on day 1 running their Four-Color Control deck:
Zak also had an good run on day 1, and finished the day up with a 6-2 record, good enough to hit day 2 with a fairly solid record! Here’s what Zak’s matchups looked like that day:

---|---|---|---|
Round 1 | Lan Nguyen | Temur Rhinos | Zak Turchansky won 2-0-0 |
Round 2 | Dan MacDonald | Amulet Titan | Zak Turchansky won 2-0-0 |

Round 7 | Ryan Primdahl | Izzet Murktide | Zak Turchansky won 2-1-0 |
Round 8 | Riccardo Pileggi | Living End | Zak Turchansky won 2-1-0 |
Zak was able to perform quite well on day 2 as well, and notably faced off against Pascal Maynard in round 11 in which they took a 2-0 win against the Domain Rhinos deck!
Round 9 | Maxim Bélanger | Merfolk | Zak Turchansky won 2-1-0 |
Round 10 | DJ Corless | Rakdos Scam | Zak Turchansky won 2-0-0 |

After powering through the day with an 80% match win rate, Zak finished up the day 10-3 and landed in 14th place at the end of swiss rounds. Short of making the top 8, but earning $1,000 of the prize pool and a Dragonlord Silumgar promo.
